Ahead of the 2015 UK general election, opinion polls suggested that neither of the two largest parties would secure an overall majority. I worked with editorial, design and development teams across BBC News to create an interactive explainer examining what could happen if no party won outright.
The experience introduced users to the realities of a hung parliament, including the difference between a formal coalition, a minority government and a confidence-and-supply agreement. Users could combine parties, track the number of seats required to govern and discover which political alliances were plausible - or had already been ruled out.
By turning complex parliamentary arithmetic and constitutional convention into a visual, game-like experience, the Coalition Builder helped audiences explore the possible outcomes for themselves and better understand how their vote could influence the formation of the next government.
